Reading comprehension
Two sets of questions to ask about any book, and two helpers to guide the way.

Key Stage 1. Three question types: Retrieve, Interpret and Choice. Robin weaves a coloured thread into the nest for each skill.
Key Stage 2. Five question types: Decode, Explain, Retrieve, Interpret and Choice. Mole digs a tunnel and uncovers a glowing mark for each skill.
RIC is a strategy used in whole-class reading sessions, and it keeps its name so children recognise the skills from class. DERIC extends it with two more.

The five skills
Work out what a tricky word says: sound it out, break it into chunks, use the letters.
Give the reason behind something, such as why a character acted or why something happened.
Find a fact or detail stated directly in the text.
Work out something the book doesn't say outright, by reading between the lines.
Say what you think: what you liked, what you would do differently, or what you want to happen.
Retrieve, Interpret and Choice keep the same colour in both, so a child moving from RIC to DERIC starts with three skills they already know.
