Portrait of J.P. Locke

The Author

Adventures with a beating heart

J.P. Locke is a children's author and serving primary-school teacher who lives in Newport, South Wales. He grew up in Bristol.

He has spent his career watching what makes children lean in, and every story he writes is built to do exactly that.

His books begin with something real, and each one grows into an adventure with a lesson tucked quietly inside. It's a teacher's instinct and a storyteller's heart, working together.

Somewhere real: a cave on a Greek island. A rainy caravan holiday. A boat trip past a nesting turtle.

His first chapter book, The Fury of the Tides, opens a mythic undersea series for readers aged 8–12. Alongside it sits a shelf of picture books for younger readers, from Jacob's Firefighter Training to The Worry Train.

When he isn't teaching or writing, he's most often beside the sea, or scribbling the next story into being. He lives in Newport with his partner and their cat, Elphie.
